Year 9s enjoy a Humanities Skills Day at Wellington College!
Events like this at Wellington College are invaluable in supporting our students to “aspire to become elite.” Once again, the Humanities Department was delighted to reward students across our GCSE Citizenship, Geography and History classes for their attendance, hard work and progress with a visit to Wellington College. The day focused on developing skills across the Humanities disciplines, while also demonstrating how rewarding it is to take these subjects to the next level.
Students began the day with a Geography session exploring the power and politics of maps. A wide range of material was used, from historic maps to those created by fitness trackers — much to the US Army’s frustration in one instance! The History session investigated the life of Licoricia of Winchester, building on our own curriculum, which examines the lives of women during the Middle Ages. Students explored the role of Licoricia’s faith alongside her work as a businesswoman before drawing their own conclusions.
Forest students were also fortunate to take part in a Politics session — something they may consider at A Level in our Sixth Form, but would not normally experience as a stand-alone subject beforehand. The group worked brilliantly with students from another local school, while confidently and maturely articulating their own opinions. The final session, in English, used Home by Warsan Shire as a stimulus for students’ creative writing. Despite a packed day — and a full roast dinner for lunch — students approached the task admirably, with some even choosing to share their responses with the group and Wellington teachers.
