Chemistry Spectroscopy Masterclass

1Year 12 students recently had the exciting opportunity to visit the University of Reading for a Chemistry Spectroscopy Masterclass which was an enriching experience that brought their classroom learning to life.

From the moment they arrived, students were immersed in a professional laboratory environment. During the masterclass, they were introduced to a range of essential spectroscopic techniques, including infrared (IR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and both ¹H and ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Expert staff guided them through the theory behind each method, explaining how these powerful tools allow chemists to identify and analyse unknown substances.

What made the experience partic3ularly impactful was the opportunity for hands-on learning. Students didn’t just observe demonstrations, they actively engaged with the equipment, handled data, and worked through real examples. Using genuine datasets, students interpreted spectra and applied their knowledge to solve chemical problems, mirroring the work carried out by professional chemists.

Overall, it was a chance to experience what studying chemistry at university is really like. Students left with a clearer grasp of spectroscopy, a greater appreciation for its role in modern chemistry, and a sense of excitement about the future study of science.
