Sociology

Sociology is all about understanding people, the world around them and how they influence each other. This has been done in a systematic manner in a subject called Sociology.

KS4

At GCSE, pupils are offered the option of studying AQA Sociology. In this, students examine topics such as the Family, Education, Crime and Deviance, Social Inequality and Research Methods.

In all topics, students are encouraged to discuss and debate both contemporary and also past experiences of people in British society, their views and behaviour.

All students have 5 lessons in a two week timetable and work done will be both oral and written. Students are encouraged to develop a critical awareness of the information they examine, and discuss so as to develop independent thinking minds.

KS5

At A level, students are offered the opportunity to study AQA A Level Sociology. This involves the study, in greater depth, of the topics The family, Education, Mass media, Crime and Deviance, Research Methods and Theories.

Pupils have 10 lessons in a two week timetable. In these, they discuss and debate a variety of issues that are connected to the topics, paying particular attention to being critical of information that is presented, developing independent awareness of issues that affect society both in the past and modern day.

These skills are particularly important in any career that deals with people and the variety of issues that they may have affecting their lives.
