Religious Studies

Subject Lead Miss S Whitethread

Religious Studies is all about understanding people, their beliefs and practices in order to promote tolerance and understanding in a modern day society. To better understand the religious imagination is to better understand the world.

Observing how others think and what they believe is one of the best ways to both earn and give respect. Learning to disagree agreeably about things you feel strongly about is an important life skill.

Students study the Edexcel GCSE Religious Studies course. GCSE Religious Studies Edexcel Syllabus B; https://qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/edexcel-gcses/religious-studies-b-2016.html

KS3

In Year 7 pupils work on developing their knowledge and understanding of the Six main religions via independent learning, group work and presentations.  After this they move on to study how people express their beliefs, religious or otherwise.

In Year 8 students study Moral Philosophy, developing critical thinking skills, their ability to deconstruct arguments and to question how we make choices that we do. We then continue with the topic ‘Is it fair?’ exploring ideas of poverty and wealth, discrimination, helping the boys develop a deeper understanding of issues in the world, before moving onto the key features of Christianity, Islam and Buddhism.

In Year 9 pupils begin looking at all aspects from the traditions of Christianity, Islam and secular beliefs:

  • Area 1: Christian Beliefs, Crime and Punishment
  • Area 2: Muslim Beliefs, A matter of life and death
